This painting has been confirmed by Giovanni Mariacher as an autograph, characteristic work by the painter of battle scenes, Jacques Courtois, called Il Borgognone. Thieme?Becker says of the productive artist, "Courtois’ battle scenes, which mostly depict skirmishes on horseback..., were highly valued and admired by his contemporaries due to their immediate freshness and the liveliness of conception and treatment, as well as the masterly way in which he captured the atmosphere of the events...”.
